Every Slovak Christmas Eve dinner begins the same way: a thin, crisp oblátka with honey and a clove of garlic, shared around the table before the kapustnica. These wafers are baked by a family wafer bakery in the Trnava region on traditional cast-iron plates that emboss a nativity or Christmas-tree motif into each one.
The recipe is what it has always been: wheat flour, water, a little sugar and oil — no eggs, no milk, nothing else. Ten wafers of about 15 cm, layered with paper in a flat cardboard box that keeps them from breaking in the post.
Store dry and they keep for months, so ordering in November for the 24th is safe. Pair with our Slovak acacia honey, or find both in the Slovak Christmas Box.
