Slovak medovníky are made with real honey and rest for days before baking, which gives them the dense, spiced, almost chewy texture that Christmas markets from Bratislava to Levoča are known for. These six — three hearts, three stars, each about 8 cm — are baked and hand-piped with white royal icing by a small gingerbread workshop in the Trenčín region that has been decorating for markets for over twenty years.
They are edible, but most people hang them on the tree or line them up on the mantelpiece and eat them in January. Packed in a rigid box with a paper divider so the icing arrives intact.
Keep dry and away from heat; the gingerbread stays good for at least eight weeks and only gets better as it softens.
Ingredients: wheat flour, honey (18 %), sugar, eggs, butter, spices (cinnamon, cloves, anise, nutmeg), raising agent; icing: sugar, egg white, lemon juice. Allergens: gluten (wheat), eggs, milk. May contain nuts.
